Have I mentioned that it feels good to be home? Reluctantly, I admit that I already miss Hong Kong. I'm sure the feeling will be much stronger come August, but for now I know that I have approximately 7 more months before I'm back in the States for any extended period of time. However, it's carpe diem--"seize the day"--as they say, and I intend to do just that.
Now that both Mom and Dad are off work for the holidays, we decided to pack up and head out for a day in Florence (a town the size of Shatin that's about an hour away from where I live). The main reason for going was to do last-minute Christmas shopping, but we figured it would also be a good chance to catch the new Chronicles of Narnia movie: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. True to the spirit of procrastination, we waited until about noon to hit the road. Our first stop was Fiesta Tapatia, home of (in my humble opinion) the best enchiladas this side of the Mississippi. Not that I would know or anything, but suffice it to say that--after Hong Kong's less-than-disappointing selection of Mexican restaurants--my beloved Fiesta was a welcome site:
Here's Mom and Sarah looking happy and cute despite the ruckus from the people in the background (mmm, salsa):
Dad with his burrito, Spanish rice, and refried beans:
As a public service, I will here offer a brief course in Mexican Food 101. Behold, the quesadilla:
And the chimichanga:
No enchiladas for me this go-around, but I will certainly be back, whether on this trip or not. Stuffed with Mexican goodness, we made the hour-long drive to Florence in Dad's new truck. We first went to the mall (yes, this is the closest mall to my house!) to pick up a few odds and ends, and then went to the movie theater. Just a fun fact here, but the name of the movie theater is the "Swamp Fox." If that sounds strange to you, don't be alarmed. To most people outside of the southern USA, this term is vaguely familiar at best. It's named after a famous patriot of the American Revolution in the late 1700s. His name was Francis Marion (nicknamed "Swamp Fox"), and anyone who's curious can defer to his Wikipedia page...because I'm lazy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Marion. I realize just how random that was but, considering how much I love history and how easily-distracted I am, these little tangents shouldn't be surprising by now. Despite the historical explanation, I have no clue why he's got his own movie theater.
Seeing as how it was fairly cold outside, Dad dropped us three off by the door and went to park the truck. Mom and Sarah look happy and cute once again in front of the Narnia movie poster. Can I just say that Aslan's a beast?
In the end, I think we all enjoyed the movie, although the first few in the series were better. We Inklings fans are now holding out for The Silver Chair, but I would be happiest if movies were made of all 7 books. Only time will tell.
Today, everyone's been getting ready for our trip to Georgia tomorrow. We're waking up early so that I can first go to a doctor's appointment, and then make the 5-hour drive to our hometown where my grandparents and several other relatives live. I'm highly allergic to dogs, and both my Mom's parents and my Dad's parents have them so I know I'm about to spend some days itchy-eyed and sneezy. Thankfully, my family booked a hotel room for my sister and me so I don't have to be around the dogs 24/7. Dogs or no dogs, freezing cold or not, it's Christmas and I'm in America. I will enjoy it!
