Last Friday night, Magda, Chocolate, and I had a mission: to find cheap and delicious Indian food! Our destination of choice? Chungking Mansions, one of my very favorite places in the whole city. Read the wikipedia article provided in the link to see why. Future tourists and IBCE newcomers, this is one experience you must not miss.
For a Friday night, the wildlife was pretty scarce. It's by far the emptiest I've ever seen Chungking Mansions. Usually, it's a purse-clutching, trying to see over people's heads, getting hassled by store-owners adventure. This time, we were able to both see the floor and hear ourselves speak. Considering this was a first time visit for both Magda and Chocolate, I think a return visit is in order so they can get the full "experience."
Either way, we had a pleasant dinner. I thank both openrice.com and advice from friends for directing us to Shama Restaurant, a humble Indian diner on the ground floor. Magda and Chocolate perusing the menus:
We ended up with a delicious selection. Fish Tikka from the Tandoori Grill:
Garlic Naan:
Fruit Rice:
And Bombay Aloo:
The only annoying this about the restaurant was that they had a large flat-screen TV with American reality shows playing. All three of us kept getting distracted. I don't know about y'all, but I don't appreciate TVs in restaurants. If I wanted to eat in front of the TV, I wouldn't go out to a restaurant. Unfortunately, most restaurants in Hong Kong have them.
Aside from that, we had a great time. I've about decided that Indian is my favorite cuisine (particularly North Indian), with Chinese as a close second. I just wish I knew how to cook it! Having my own kitchen next year will hopefully give me a chance to try some things out. Anyone know if I can buy garam masala or ghee somewhere in Columbia?
That said, it's probably a good thing I don't live anywhere close to an Indian sweet shop. The three of us still felt hungry afterwards and shamelessly loaded up on burfi, jalebi, laddu, and peda. I had the leftovers for breakfast this morning. So bad, but so good. Plus, it's easier not to feel guilty when you have two friends viciously chowing down on burfi with you. I'm really going to miss the people I've met here!
